Neurodiversity Paradigm-aligned and Marginalized Neurotype Affirming
Specializing in supporting clients with marginalized neurotypes ("neurodivergent" or marginalized "neurostyles"). We all live in a world of diverse ways of thinking, feeling, and experiencing ("neurodiversity"). Through an affirming lens, we support your therapy needs and/or provide assessment to help you gain access to resources. We understand that Autistic and/or folks with ADHD (or, as Dr. Nick Walker says, "kinetic cognitive style") need support that accepts and honors differences rather than pathologizing lived experiences.
THE WHY:
I wholeheartedly recognize that understanding adult autism, ADHD, CPTSD - and even the adult version of 'reactive attachment' due to deep childhood wounds - goes beyond medical classifications, pathology, and diagnostic criteria.
I want to know YOUR story...
THE HOW:
I had a client once ask me, "Where on the Spectrum am I? What are my coordinates?" This inspired me to attempt to answer that question in a creative way...
I use a qualitative assessment interview protocol that embraces the unique experiences and perspectives of YOU -the protagonist.
Listening to Personal Narratives via In-Depth Interviews:
I start out with a consultation with you so that we can both have the quintessential "vibe check" - you know, making sure you feel safe enough and encouraged with the space I provide.
I conduct in-depth interviews with adults of various marginalized neurotypes and brain styles. These interviews are more like conversations that allow us to explore your unique life journey, challenges, idiosyncrasies, and strengths. I listen actively and seek to understand our unique perspective and, sometimes, the observations of an inner circle of trusted individuals... a Board of Trustees, if you will....
The perspectives provided by your Board of Trustees can offer us valuable context. These external narratives enrich our understanding and guide the assessment process to better understand your concept of Self in relation to internal and external experiences and perceptions. Of course, this is not mandatory - no one else is required to give input. In here, you get to decide.
Exploring Potential Sources of Distress via a Trauma-Trained Approach:
I recognize that trauma can impact the brain...profoundly. Through my dissertation process - and beyond - I gained an intimate understanding of the brain styles that have a greater risk of exposure to trauma - with lower systemic resilience reserves (i.e., ADHD in females). I am trained in EMDR, advanced trauma modalities at the doctoral level, and I am cultivating a protocol for inner child therapy + play therapy for folks at the intersection of neurodivergence and erotic marginalization who have experienced complex, compounded trauma.
Beyond Symptomatology:
My protocol and battery of assessments I use allows for deeper insight into characteristics, traits, and experiences that often manifest in ways that are more nuanced (and less distressing) than 'symptoms'. We explore your coping practices, compensatory strategies, masking energy expenditure and related burnout, communication strategies, trust in Self and inner experiences vs. outer perceptions, sensory experiences, strengths, and unique interests or ("SpIns"). These insights inform personalized patterns and trajectories.
Collaboration and Empowerment through Dialogue (speaking and non-speaking):
Throughout this process, I continually respect, promote, and honor the right of autonomy. My goal is to empower individuals with self-awareness, insight, understanding of the how and why of patterns, and instill a sense of agency.
Holistic Understanding:
We go beyond a diagnosis - or, sometimes diagnonsense - to understand your way of being in the world—your passions, challenges, and aspirations. The affirming approach I foster can lead to an increased understanding of Self, which is sometimes accompanied with "grief and relief". After I present the findings (think of an abbreviated thesis on your brain style with valuable resources), you are encouraged to work through the feelings, thoughts, and concerns with one of our clinical team members.
Together, we aim to create a supportive and validating space for adults marginalized brain styles.

Brain Styles with Dr. Robyn L. Flores

They shared stories of letting their inner rebel out from the shadows of dominant society, with a persistent drive for autonomy. They also shared the “exhaustion” that sometimes comes with their innate non-conformist energy, allowing them to keep swimming
in a mainstream world.
